How do I download a photo or an album?

The owner of an album can always download the original photos of an album that he or she created. In the "Create Group & Share" step, the owner of an album can also decide who can download photos. Under Settings in the "Create Group & Share" step, the owner can choose to let No one, except the album owner, the Group, referring to those that are invited as Contributors or Viewers, or Everyone that can see the album, download full resolution photos.

To download an album:

  1. Mouse-over the album you would like to download.
  2. Click on the "i" that shows. The "i" stand for Information menu.
  3. You will see various options including Download.
  4. Select Download to download the entire album and follow your browser instructions for where the photo is downloaded.

To download a photo:

  1. Click on the Album from which you would like to download a photo. You will then be in the Grid View for the album
  2. Point your mouse over the photo you would like to download. You will see various icons appear.  (See screenshot below)
  3. Click the Info menu (it is the lower case i in a circle) and you will see various options including to Download the photo
  4. Select download and follow your browser instructions for where the photo is downloaded.

How to Unzip the Album Downloads

Usually, the built-in software on Mac and PC will unzip the zip files for the album downloads.

If not, we suggest the following:

  • For Mac users, "The Unarchiver" is free. Please download it at: http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver
  • We have discovered a bug in unarchiver for albums larger than 4 gigabytes (and submitted a fix!).  Until an update is released, for zip files that are over about 3.9 GB, Mac users will need to use something like http://macitbetter.com/
  • For Window users, the built in unzip software should work. However, for Windows users with an earlier version than Windows 7, please use http://www.7-zip.org/

I don't get an "i" when I hover over the album thumbnail, or a photo thumbnail. Only a share icon and a favourites icon. I'm using Safari 5.1.2 on a Mac.  Can you help? Thanks.

Robin - I sent a separate note to you via help but for everyone else, the album owner has options to control downloads, i.e. not let anyone download, only let the group or let everyone download photos.  there will be times therefore when you won't see the option.

I find that the download option not very intuitive.

1. The viewer has to know to roll the cursor over the album, and

2. Why would "i" for information be intuitively the place to download?

So far all the people I've shown this to have asked me the same question. "How can I download?"

Frustrating.

Yes, we have heard this and are looking at some changes for making this more obvious.

I've found that when I set an album to "Hidden", then my friends have no way to download the album, since they cannot see the album through the view of my page, rather the e-mail link takes them into a thumbnail view of photos in the album where they have the option to download individual pictures.  However, if I set the album to "public", then they can see the album on my page and have the option to download it (although this too is not intuitive as my friend would need to know to back out of the album to my page in order to download it).  Is it possible to resolve this inconsistency?  It seems to me that selection of hidden versus public album shouldn't have an impact on the ability of friends to download the images.

Perhaps a "download album" link when viewing the album thumbnails would resolve both problems.

Yes, we just realized that recently as well...  Sorry about that. A current workaround before we fix this is to have people, create a free account, "Like" the album and then it will appear on their home page when they are signed in and then they can access the download button.
